Starbucks is to test a 5p takeaway cup charge across all of its 950 stores in the UK from next Thursday (26 July), with the money raised going to environmental charity Hubbub.

The move follows a three-month trial in London and will see all stores add 5p on to the cost of any drink purchased in a paper cup in a bid to encourage customers to bring in a reusable cup.  Customers using reusable cups already receive 25p off Starbucks drinks.

As of next week there will be a 5p cup charge on all paper takeaway cups, every penny will be going to Hubbub, an environmental charity aimed at making the world a greener place. If you have any questions pop into store and see us.

The three-month trial showed a 126% uplift in the use of reusable cups in participating stores, which was measured by the number of customers redeeming the reusable 25p cup discount.

Throughout the trial Starbucks worked with Hubbub, who used the proceeds to fund a report evaluating the overall impact of the charge on customer behaviour. According to the report, the percentage of customers bringing in their own cup increased in the trial stores from 2.2% before the trial to 5.8% during the trial with mornings seeing 8% of all hot drinks served in reusable mugs or tumblers.

The funds raised from the rollout of the 5p charge will continue to support recycling and sustainability efforts with Hubbub, with a focus on reducing plastic pollution across the UK and prompting consumers to rethink the use of plastic.

Earlier this year Starbucks committed $10m to develop a fully recyclable and compostable hot cup in partnership with Closed Loop Partners, through the NextGen Cup Challenge. The company also recently announced plans to eliminate single-use plastic straws globally by 2020, with a new Starbucks strawless lid to be standard on all iced coffee, tea and espresso drinks.

Martin Brok, President, Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa said:

“We saw encouraging results from the first three months of this trial with Hubbub, and what stood out to us was the positive response we had from our partners and customers who continue to push us to innovate and find ways to reduce waste. Extending this to all our stores across Britain is an exciting step and we’re hoping this charge will remind customers to rethink their use of single-use plastic as it has with plastic bags.”

Trewin Restorick, CEO and Founder of Hubbub said:

“Single-use plastics is an issue that has become more significant in people’s minds than ever before. The trial proved this, showing that customers have an increased awareness of the need to reduce waste from single-use cups. A 5p charge is an effective way to prompt this change. We’re excited to be working with Starbucks, particularly as they take on board the findings of the trial and introduce the charge across the whole of the UK. We look forward to discovering what more can be done to encourage people to use reusable cups.”

Compliance specialist Ecosurety is allocating compliance evidence revenue to support campaigns by Hubbub, an environmental charity that specialises in behaviour change, in a bid to boost UK recycling.

Obligated producers and recyclers will be canvassed about which issues or campaigns should be prioritised as part of the partnership between Ecosurety and Hubbub.

A public awareness campaign will be launched in the autumn with major UK retailers to encourage more households to recycle domestic batteries.
Recent campaigns by Hubbub include a coffee cup recycling initiative and anti-litter strategies.

Ecosurety members’ compliance payments will be put towards consumer awareness campaigns via its Circularety platform, set up with the aim of increasing transparency and recycling in the UK.

They are expected to generate more recycling and ultimately lower costs for producer members.

EcosuretyJames Piper, managing director at Ecosurety (pictured), said: “We strongly feel that if UK consumers were better informed and therefore better able to care about recycling best practice, our recycling rates would increase even further.

“The collaboration with Hubbub, and use of compliance evidence money that has already been spent by producers, aims to fix this disconnect between the consumer and the waste and recycling industry.”

Trewin Restorick, Hubbub chief executive, said: ”We are committed to creating campaigns with tangible impacts and longevity, and are excited to devise awareness-raising campaigns to help UK consumers make better choices about how and what they recycle.”

Ecosurety was a double winner at MRW’s 2017 National Recycling Awards.

Recycling Cans, Cans for Kids

Cans For Kids is a registered charity, formed in 1990 to organize the collection and recycling of aluminium cans in Cyprus. To encourage people to save their cans, it was decided to use the proceeds to purchase medical equipment for the children’s wards at Cypriot hospitals. Since its inception, more than 25 million cans have been collected, and over €260,000 euros worth of equipment has been donated to the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, which is the central pediatric hospital in Cyprus, treating seriously ill children from all over the island. By saving your cans for Cans For Kids, not only do you help the environment, but you know that your efforts are giving something back to the community.

Cans For Kids raises awareness of the benefits of recycling by visiting schools to give talks and show the Cans For Kids video explaining why we should recycle aluminium. Cans For Kids won the World Energy Globe Award in the category “Youth”. Find out more about Cans for Kids, what they do and how you can get involved, by visiting their website at http://www.cansforkids.org/.

According to NerdWallet, the USA is the fifth most generous country in the world. The table above lists the top 10 cities in the United States scored for the most generous places. Rankings were based on the following metrics:

  1. Volunteer rates: the percentage of residents in the city that volunteered in the past year
  2. Volunteer hours: the hours a resident volunteered per year
  3. Percentage of median income donated: this was calculated by analyzing the median contribution and the median discretionary income

All data was obtained from the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Chronicle of Philanthropy. 366 places were analyzed.

Humanitarianism and Charity from Kym Gordon MooreToday is National Humanitarian Day, whose meaning is the same as World Humanitarian Day, which is celebrated on August 19. Humanitarianism is an act of kindness, sympathy and benevolence. It is genuine concern for human welfare and the willingness to engage in philanthropy through many spectrums. We see evidence of school children doing things to help others and we see so much giving by many others during a time when it seems like so many people are not in a financial position to do something.

Everyone can make a difference regardless of race, creed, color or financial status. Instead of waiting for a designated day of celebration to reach out and pay it forward, do something at any time to show your good stewardship and how much you care about the human, ecological, animal and educational condition. Use this day as an example for making  a difference every day!

Feel free to share with us how you make a difference in your community! Click on the photo below to see now these students from Indian Trail Elementary School used the miles they walked to bring clean water to those who do not have access to clean drinking water.

When we think about our purpose and direction in life, we have to stop and listen to that inner spirit that tells us we must be a bigger part of the picture and solution when taking care of the “least of these.” If we are not part of that solution then we are definitely part of the problem or indifferent to the need. When we began our mission with Favorite Things For A CAUSE in 2007, we were inspired by and became a part of the multitude of people who stepped up to the plate to make a difference, even if it was in their own back yards.

There is a classic line in a song that touched so many of us in 1985, that reminds us of our calling when we pay attention: “There comes a time, when we heed a certain call…” It’s from the song “We Are the World” that bridged an array of stars who checked their egos at the door for a bigger cause. We witnessed some amazing and incredible star-studded talent (Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warick, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie, James Ingram, Ray Charles, Billy Joel, etc) who came together to help bridge a nation and global community, by recognizing a humanistic need to make choices that will save generations of people around the world.

As we look ahead to this leap year, we will take a leap of faith to heed that certain call and to continue making this world a better place for you and me! Peace & Blessings everyone! Happy New Year!

Beware of Shady Characters!

When we see people in need, more often than not, we will have a heart and will be charitable for whatever cause arises. In the midst of victims suffering from the aftermath of hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, wild fires or flooding, you will see an influx of neighbor helping neighbor, even if the neighbor is half way around the world.

On the flipside of that charitable coin, lies something more sinister than the storm itself. Charity scams, deceptive home repair contractors and other con artists try to capitalize on the hardship of suffering people and often succeed. If you are a victim of a natural disaster or know someone who is, be vigilant by not becoming a victim again for fraudulence sake. If you receive a check from an insurance claim or seek to hire someone to do some repairs for you, we highly recommend that you do your homework. Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints or any type of infraction that may be reported about a company or business you are thinking about hiring. Often these folks will probably start a new company under a new name if they were forced to shut down their former business. However, they will leave some type of paper trail that will send up a red flag of caution.

Demand to see a copy of this contractor’s liability insurance policy to make sure that they are legitimately licensed and bonded. If the individual or company is running a legitimate business, they won’t mind if you contact their insurer to make sure their policy is valid. As a word of caution, do not act out of haste and desperation. Con artists know when you are desperate, gullible and will prey on your fears and hesitations if you allow it.
