Reading is a fundamental freedom for every citizen in this country. If you live in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, did you know that over 60,000 kids are growing up in the Greater Charlotte area with few, if any age-appropriate books at home? When we heard about Promising Pages we had to share what they do to promote a life-long love of reading for children through early literacy intervention.

Promising Pages is a Charlotte, NC based 501(c)(3) non-profit that takes books others have outgrown and gives them new life. The organization partners with Social Service Agencies, Title I Schools, and other organizations to get books and revolutionary programming to kids who need it! Their mascots, Erm the Bookworm and Erma the Bookworma, place these books directly into the hands of children.

Promising Pages uniquely re-purposes used books and has kept tens of thousands of books out of landfills, while at the same time educating children about the importance and excitement of reading. Team Read is a high school and college leadership program comprised of more than 50 of some of the best, and brightest high school and college students from 18 area schools. The leaders hosted more than 120 early literacy events throughout the Charlotte area. Team Read, 2013, sponsored by the Dale Earnhardt Foundation is a way to “Continue The Legend,” by supporting Mr. Earnhardt’s lifelong commitment to Children, Education and Environmental/Wildlife Preservation.

Promising Pages collects new and gently used children’s books from bookworms who have outgrown them and we give those books new life! Volunteers sort, clean, stamp, label and wrap our books as special presents. They are then redistributed back into the community to thousands of children who have few, if any age-appropriate books at home.

The Promising Pages concept has already had such a big impact in the kids they have served, even though they have only been in operation since 2011. Their Magic Book Parties or distribution events generates a level of enthusiasm towards a lifetime of reading and learning. Here is some great preliminary data from their 2012-2013 School Year “Magic Book Parties:”

– 100% of the teachers reported that Magic Book Parties are “Very Necessary” or “Extremely Necessary” in ensuring reading success in their Title 1 classrooms
– 90% of students “truly benefited” from the Magic Book Party Program and had improved reading levels
– 70% of the students we worked with have an “improved self-esteem” because of our programs
– 70% of our students read for pleasure on “Most Nights”
– All teachers reported their students either liked books “3 to 5 times more” (80%) or “More than 10x’s more” (20%) due to our Magic Book Party programming
– Each child received a Magic Book and at least 15+ stack of self-selected books
