Houston, Texas set the stage for the first Rubbish to Runway Fashion Show that showcased garments madefrom recycled, re-purposed materials. All proceeds from this show will go to Long Way Home.

Long Way HomeLong Way Home is a nonprofit that uses sustainable design and materials to construct self-sufficient schools that promote education, employment and environmental stewardship. Long Way Home’s mission as a registered US 501(c)3 is to use sustainable design and materials to construct self-sufficient schools that promote education, employment and environmental stewardship. Their vision is to empower communities to break the cycle of poverty through innovative solutions to local challenges.

Yessenia Morales, founder of Rubbish to Runway Houston, was motivated to start this event in honor of her twin sister Vanessa, who died in a traffic accident a few days before her birthday. Morales noted that the Rubbish to Runway Fashio Show combined Vanessa’s love of fashion, education, recycling and giving back. Long Way Home will honor Vanessa by adding a library in her name.

According to Yessenia, Rubbish to Runway Houston will be an annual event to keep her sister’s memory alive.
