Cigarette Butts, Recycling Cigarette Butts, Cigarette Waste Brigade

We are discovering how many organizations are creating innovative ways to recycle some of those pesky pieces of litter that have become such a nuisance on our highways, sidewalks and landfills. When we saw what Foxwoods Resort Casino began doing with their collection of cigarette butts, we had to spread the word.

If you pull up to many intersections on the roads and highways, it seems like more intersections than not are serving as unsightly ashtrays. How thoughtless, sad and horrific! Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut however, bags the cigarette butts collected at their casino and mail them to a specialty recycling business in New Jersey. The butts, which are not biodegradable, are made into plastic pellets that can be used for plastic lumber for industrial purposes or made into pallets. The tobacco flakes and cigarette paper is composted.

TerraCycle, a private U.S. small business headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey has a Cigarette Waste Brigade, open to any organization or individual older than 21. The brigade accepts cigarette butts, ash, loose tobacco and carton packaging of cigarettes. All you have to do is put the extinguished cigarettes into a bag, print a free UPS label from TerraCycle’s website, and mail them to a TerraCycle facility.
