North Carolina Aquariums, NC Aquarium Society

Charity Navigator awarded the N.C. Aquarium Society the coveted four-star rating for 2014. Charity Navigator is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, working to guide intelligent giving and providing prospective donors with inside information on charities they might choose to support. Charity Navigator ranks the NC Aquarium Society among the nations’s top zoo and aquarium non-profits.

The North Carolina Aquarium Society was established in 1986. Their motto is “Inspiring Appreciation and Conservation of North Carolina’s Aquatic Environments.” The mission of this membership based nonprofit is to assist North Carolina’s aquariums at Fort Fisher (New Hanover County), Pine Knoll Shores (Carteret County), on Roanoke Island (Dare County) and Jeannette’s Pier. NCAS’s overall mission is to teach the public about the importance of coastal ecology and conservation, much of it by hands-on experience.

In 1976, the Aquariums were established to promote an awareness, understanding, appreciation and conservation of the diverse natural and cultural resources of North Carolina’s ocean, estuaries, rivers, streams and other aquatic environments.
