AIDS, World AIDS Day, HIV, AIDS AwarenessToday is World AIDS Day. December 1 is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic resulting from the spread of HIV infection. The concept originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, with an estimated 38.6 million people living with HIV, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. HIV stands for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is the final stage of HIV disease, which causes severe damage to the immune system.
