Francene Marie and Kym Gordon Moore with young men from the Greater Boys & Girls Club in Charlotte, N.C.

On Monday evening, April 23, 2012 the first World Book Night celebration was held in cities across the United States of America. Kym Gordon Moore, one of the 2012 World Book Night Givers in North Carolina and co-founder of Favorite Things for a CAUSE, shared copies of “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Dr. Maya Angelou with some of the youth who attend the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.

World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread the joy and love of reading while giving out special edition paperbacks by renowned, award winning authors. Last year, the UK celebrated this event and gave away a million special edition books to thousands of unsuspecting and grateful recipients.

The recipients from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Charlotte were also presented with goodie bags that contained a specially produced Vocabulary Building CD created and produced by Favorite Things for a CAUSE co-founder Francene Marie Morris. This CD emphasizes the power of learning words to add to your daily vocabulary repertoire or when you are speaking in front of an audience. Learn more about this vocabulary building CD at My Media Tutor.

Among the special treats in the recipients goodie bags, Chele Fassig Promotions Director with The Fan/Charlotte donated key chains and koozies, and Filters Fast LLC, a locally owned water and air filtration company donated reusable water bottles.

The Boys & Girls Club offers a safe environment to learn and grow while having fun. Their mission is to help boys and girls develop the qualities needed to become responsible leaders and citizens. They offer specialized education and career programs, health and life skills, character and leadership programs, art programs, as well as sports, fitness and recreation.

A special thanks to the following people who worked with this project to make it come to fruition:

  • Lance Ferrell, CEO of Literacy R.O.C.K.S. Project
  • Dana Carpenter, Operations Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte
  • Felicia Cohen, Unit Director of the Belmont Avenue Boys & Girls Clubs

The greatest assets in our communities are the people who live there. Each sector of our community is essential in creating a wholesome society. World Book Night 2012 united these sectors into a powerhouse of knowledge, power and making history for everyone involved.

  1. It is a gift to positively mold the mind of a teen. The memory of giving and receiving is indelibly sketched, never forgotten. Thanks Kym Gordon Moore for being hand-picked as a “giver” for World Book Night in the USA!!!!!
